‘Tis the Season to be Jolly?By Jim Elliff

“‘Tis the Season to be jolly?” Well, maybe.

The business of Christmas, that is, the hard and cold commercial trade of the Thanksgiving to Christmas sales window, is a measure of how well America is doing. It’s the thermometer in our corporate mouths.

Needs are created through the media in order to entice the buyer into purchasing more this year than last. No one is to be disappointed at Christmas, after all. The manipulation is as blatant toward children as adults. And who can bring themselves to crush the psyche of anyone by not giving them all they want?

The end result of all of this is “happiness.” The receivers of the presents are happy and the merchandisers are happy. The media people are happy and the credit card people are happy. Everything is happy during Christmas. Continue Reading »

Room for Jesus?

Charles Spurgeon

“And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.” — Luke 2:7

Have you room for Christ?  Have you room for Christ?  As the palace, and the forum, and the inn, have no room for Christ, and as the places of public resort have none, have you room for Christ?

“Well,” says one, “I have room for him, but I am not worthy that he should come to me.”  Ah! I did not ask about worthiness; have you room for him?  “Oh,” says one, “I have an empty void the world can never fill!”  Ah! I see you have room for him.  “Oh! but the room I have in my heart is so base!”  So was the manger.  “But it is so despicable!”  So was the manger a thing to be despised.  “Ah! but my heart is so foul!”  So, perhaps, the manger may have been.  “Oh! but I feel it is a place not at all fit for Christ!”  Nor was the manger a place fit for him, and yet there was he laid.”  Oh! but I have been such a sinner; I feel as if my heart had been a den of beasts and devils!”  Well, the manger had been a place where beasts had fed.  Have you room for him?  Never mind what the past has been; he can forget and forgive.  It matters not what even the present state may be if thou mourn it.  If thou hast but room for Christ he will come and be thy guest.  Continue Reading »

My Times Are In Thy Hand  by C. H. Spurgeon

“My times are in thy hand.” — Psalm 31:15

David was sad: his life was spent with grief, and his years with sighing.  His sorrow had wasted his strength, and even his bones were consumed within him.  Cruel enemies pursued him with malicious craft, even seeking his life.  At such a time, he used the best resource of grief; for he says in verse 14, “But I trusted in thee, O Lord.”  He had no other refuge but that which he found in faith in the Lord his God.  If enemies slandered him, he did not render railing for railing; if they devised to take away his life, he did not meet violence with violence; but he calmly trusted in the Lord.  They ran hither and thither, using all kinds of nets and traps to make the man of God their victim; but he met all their inventions with the one simple defense of trust in God.  Many are the fiery darts of the wicked one; but our shield is one.  The shield of faith not only quenches fiery darts, but it breaks arrows of steel.  Though the javelins of the foe were dipped in the venom of hell, yet our one shield of faith would hold us harmless, casting them off from us.  Thus David had the grand resource of faith in the hour of danger. Knocked Down but Still Going! (November 2015 Update)

In 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, The Apostle Paul speaks about the many difficulties he was facing: “We are pressed on every side by troubles, but not crushed and broken. We are perplexed because we don’t know why things happen as they do, but we don’t give up and quit. We are hunted down, but God never abandons us. We get knocked down, but we get up again and keep going.” October has been a difficult month for me physically but very rewarding in ministry.  Certainly my difficulties are nothing compared to those that Paul was facing on every side.  But the physical difficulties I’m having this month have made this verse very relevant to me!  We are certainly “perplexed because we don’t know why things happen as they do, but we don’t give up and quit.” The ministry is too important to those we serve here in Ukraine.  More about the health problems later in this update …

Teaching Ministry in Lviv …

The Worship and Prayer class I taught in Lviv at Ukrainian Baptist Seminary went especially well.  I really enjoyed being part of this new school.  Every morning, they begin with a chapel worship time.  It is good to begin each day with worship!  Then we have 8 hours of class (with a lunch break, of course).  Every evening, I had papers to grade and class to prepare for.  I was so busy that I did not have time to leave the seminary building during the week.  But the class was great!  The students had very good, practical and theological questions and we covered many important topics for their local churches.

English Opens Doors! (October 2015 Update)

Over the last two weeks, I have been involved in teaching English classes through Campus (Crusade) Ministries at Shevchenko National University.  We had 360 students come to interviews to be part of this 2-week intensive English classes (3 hours each evening).  This year, we were only able to take 160 students.  But it is one of the few campuses where they still allow us to teach biblical passages in our English lessons and we have had some really great discussions.

In my class (of about 22 students), we have discussed salvation, eternal life, forgiveness and many other spiritual topics.  The students have been very open and full of questions about Christianity.  In addition to the classes, we are meeting during the day with some students who want more information about Christianity and following Christ.  After the classes end this week, we will be following up personally as well as inviting students to come to a weekly Bible Study.  Please continue to pray for this ministry.  It is amazing to see how many doors (and lives) are opened to the gospel through simply teaching English!
